August 2007 Chapter News and Announcements
08.24.07 - 12:10pm
September marks the beginning of the chapter’s “2008 Program Year” and members of the Board have been working hard to ensure that the year gets off to a good start. The Board held it’s annual planning meeting in July and established some exciting goals for events and chapter programs that you’ll be hearing about as the year progresses.
As has become the custom, I’ll provide a consolidated monthly update to all of of our mailing list subscribers and sponsors in an effort to minimize the ISSA-SPAM that you are subjected to. If you have events or news items that you would like included in these e-mails please try to have them to me by the first of the month.
This month I’d like to pass along the following information:
1. Upcoming Chapter Meetings (see atached flyers for full details)
Thursday, September 20th; 3:00pm - Our first monthly chapter meeting for the new program year will feature the presentation “Securing Your Data From Cybercriminals” provided by Trend Micro. The focus of this presentation will be the evolutions and changes to the threat landscape over the past few years. This is a topic long overdue for the chapter. How many of us have recently looked “under the hood” of our antivirus/antimalware systems, honestly? September 2007 Meeting Announcement
Thursday, October 18th; 3:00pm - October sees the return of Blackhat and ISSA Portland speaking veteran Jeremiah Grossman who will present “Hacking Intranet Websites from the Outside (Take 2) “Fun With and Without JavaScript Malware”". This presentation was a highlight at Blackhat 2007 and having Jeremiah present it in person at ISSA-Portland is a real treat for the chapter. October 2007 Meeting Announcement
2. ISSA International Elections - The elections are currently underway. If you are a member in good standing you should have received a ballot. If you did not receive a ballot or you have additional questions please visit: http://www.issa.org/News/Association/20070801-2007-Elections-are-Underway.html . Please cast your ballot and show support for your organization.
3. Chapter Website/Technology Updates - The chapter website is being migrated over to a new, improved, and more manageable environment. In the interim, content is not being updated. The mailing list, however, is still active and you can check your mailing list enrollment at: http://two.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/issa-members . We hope to have our new website up and running shortly and we’ll let you know when it is available.
4. September Security Event at Portland State University - On September 18 and 19, 2007, Portland State University’s Office of Information Technology will be hosting IP3, Inc for a comprehensive IT-IA Security seminar for corporate/institutional IT security leaders. Ken Kousky, President and CEO of IP3, will conduct and showcase the world-class seminar, “From Strategy to Reality: The Bigger Picture”. This is a must attend event for all IT-IA security executives looking for a comprehensive over-view of today’s information assurance security issues and solutions. Get it all.. by attending this one event! ISSA Portland has been given a VERY limited number of “free” registrations for this event. These registrations are available on a first-come, first-served basis so e-mail President@issa-portland.org if you want one. Even if you don’t get a complimentary registration, you can register at a substantial discount by using the ISSA discount registration code. Full details and registration for the event (including the discount codes) can be found at: http://www.ip3seminars.com/security/register.php .
Keep in touch with the Board. We’ll see you all in September.
Respectfully,
Mike Boyd
President
